What is Crunchwrap supreme
Think of a large tortilla layered up with seasoned meat ( I absolutely LOVE making those with ground American lamb), shredded cheese and this Nacho Cheese Sauce. Then add loads of fresh veggies ( tomatoes, avocado, lettuce, scallions, cilantro), some cool sour cream, Homemade Salsa, a a secret crunch layer of tostada or tortilla chips in the middle.
Now extra cheese goes on top and the tortilla is wrapped up in certain steps (more on how to fold a crunchwrap supreme below) ad the wrap is pan seared. That’s how its gets the name crunch, so it’s like your favorite wrap but with a perfect crunch inside nd out.
Is it the same as Taco Bell Crunchwrap?
So while this recipe is a copycat of the famous Taco Bell Crunchwrap, it’s only BETER made homemade and fresh with your favorite ingredients rather than theirs!
Another thing is, I have made it with seasoned ground beef as the originally recipe is, and I have also tried with seasoned ground American lamb. And you cab certainly guess which one I preferred!
Ingredients for Crunchwrap Supreme Recipe
There are basically two components to this recipe, one of them is the meat mixture. You may choose to simply use store bought taco seasoning and mix that in the ground beef or lamb. Or you can use the ingredients below for seasoning the meat:
- Seasoned Taco Meat (you could use beef or chicken but my favorite is ground Lamb by far)
- Spices : salt & pepper
- Chilli powder
- oregano
- cumin
- cilantro
- onions and garlic
The other component in the wrap is basically the wrap, fresh ingredients and cheeses you choose to add in and layer. These include:
- Flour tortillas : You’ll need 2 sizes. One large tortilla as a wrap, and the other serves as a topping (more on how to fold below). It’s important to make sure the sizes are different as one of them will be folded over the layers of filling, while the other will cover the top only.
Filling
- Shredded Cheese (cheddar or Monterey Jack or a combo)
- Nacho Cheese Sauce Recipe
- Sliced avocado or Guacamole
- Homemade Salsa
- Sour cream
- Shredded Lettuce
- Sliced Jalapeño , fresh or jarred or both! (optional)
- Scallions
- Cilantro
- Crunchy Tostada or your favorite tortilla chips for a middle crunch layer
- More cheese!
Cook the Meat for Crunchwrap Supreme
As I mentioned, you may want to skip this step if you already have some precooked ground meat, and you can even use store bought taco seasoning. However I wanted to show you exactly how to cook the meat for the crucnhwrap supreme in case you’re making it from scratch.
Start off by cooking some onions in oil until soft and translucent.
Now add in your meat, all the seasoning and minced garlic all at once to the pan and start mixing that together to spread the seasoning and garlic evenly. And also to cook the meat well.
You wan to cook and break down the meat until it’s cooked through and crumbled. At that point you’ll finish it off with a light sprinkle of cilantro and jalapeño if you’d like.
And there you have it! Ready to proceed with making our homemade Crunchwrap supreme! Just allow the meat to cool down slightly before proceeding.
How to Make Crunchwrap Supreme
This is a step by step layering to make the best Crunchwrap supreme, so make sure you include every layer! I’m sharing it with images so you can easily visualize the process and imagine all the deliciousness here with each ingredient layered!

TIP: Make sure as you’re piling up the layers to only use the middle/center of the tortilla as shown below.
Now that you’ve got those perfect layers for the Crunchwrap supreme it’s time to fold that baby over.
How do you Fold a Crunchwrap Supreme
This step by step visual tutorial will be super helpful (aside from the video of course) since folding the wrap is important to keep all the filling and shape intact.
Start by folding over one side of the large tortilla over the top while using the small tortilla as the base. You don’t want to overlap with the small tortilla here, you basically want to cover up around it and seal in the ingredients.
Keep one hand over the folded part of the tortilla and now grab the other side (working at a 45 degree angle) of the tortilla. Fold that side as well so it covers only that side of the wrap leaving the top covered by the small tortilla.
Now slowly move on to the bottom part of the tortilla and repeat the folding process creating pleats as you go.
Always make sure your fingers are keeping the already folded up parts intact by holding them down.
And now repeat the folding again.
Until you’re just set to complete the whole wrap. It looks similar to a hexagon with 6 angles or 6 sides. You can however make just 5 angles and sides to your crunchwrap supreme. Both of those work just as well, however I find that the extra 6th fold gives better security for the wrap to stay intact.
Cook the Crunchwrap Supreme
Now that you’ve got that perfect wrap all tight and ready, you want to keep your hand holding the wrap tightly as it can open up.
Take that wrap and place it in a medium hot skillet with cooking spray, seam side down. So you’ll have the side of the small tortilla facing the pan.
Let that cook for 2 minutes until it starts to look golden brown and you’ll notice as the heat melts the cheese, the wrap retains it’s shape and you no longer have to worry about that.
Now carefully flip over the crunchwrap and give it an extra 2 minute sear on that side. And you’re ready to enjoy!
The best way to eat the crunchwrap supreme is to cut it in half and eat each half separately. Just look at those gorgeous layers!!
Homemade Crunchwrap Supreme Tips
- Use ground beef fopr the classic Crunchwrap Supreme.
- Try making it with American Lamb for a different and tasty wrap. American lamb is superior to any other lamb as it’s local, fresh and raised with a high industry standard. On top of all, it tastes absolutely better than any other!
- You can skip the seasoning step of the meat by buying taco seasoning from the store and simply mix that in the meat with the onions and cook until the temperature of the meat is 175 degrees F at least.
- When buying tortilla for this recipe, make sure you buy the large size 9 to 10 inch for wrapping. And a smaller one about 5 inch for the top. There has to be a significant difference in sizes so that the wrap holds its shape well.
- The inside crunch layer is made using a tostado, otherwise you can use your favorite crunchy tortilla chips.
- When it comes to layering, make sure you follow the steps as this is optimal cheese distribution. That way as you’re cooking it, the layers hold themselves well as the cheese begins to melt.
- When layering, make sure you only use the center/middle part of the tortilla to layer on. Avoid spreading the filling to the sides because it will be harder to wrap up later.
- When folding, follow the steps and always make sure you have your fingers pressing down on the edges already folded in.
- Sear the wrap with the seam side down ALWAYS so that the shape stays intact right away.
What is the difference between crunchwrap and crunchwrap supreme?
The crunchwrap initially came out with a single layer of meat, cheese, lettuce and then went into becoming the Crunchwrap supreme by adding an extra layer of cheese, the crunchy tostada and more filling ingredients.
